Well my wife and I finally caught the Game of Thrones bug and promptly went out to purchase an Apple TV and a HBO Now subscription.
We hooked everything up to the bedroom TV so we could have some “us time” after the kids had gone to bed. Thrones is such a blast but there is no way we could crank up the sound and risk the kids hearing any of the dialogue or other sounds.
I spent some time researching the best way to connect the Apple TV to headphones and I couldn’t be happier with the results.
The Specialty-AV Digital Optical Coax to Analog Stereo Audio Converter (shown in the picture above) is an awesome solution to connecting headphones to the Apple TV.
We originally went with a cheap headphone Y cable to connect both of our Apple headphones to but replaced them with a quality splitter and extension cable. The better Y cable allowed us to fully plug in the headphone jack and the converter sounds great.
What you will need:
- The converter listed above
- Digital Optical Cable
- A quality headphone Y cable if you want to watch with two headphones
- Extension cable unless you have long headphone cables
This set up works great for us. We have had the converter now for about 5 months.
As you know, all you have for an output on the Apple TV is the Optical Out. Connect a digital optical cable to the Apple TV and then connect that cable to the converter. The converter has a headphone jack and volume control.
